Doom II, Green Day demo lead XBL releases

Xbox Live Update: Release slate also includes Voodoo Dice, Games on Demand launches for Call of Duty 4, Battlefield 2: Modern Combat, Battlestations: Midway.
This week's Xbox Live Marketplace update is striking a rather combative tone, spearheaded by military-minded Games on Demand entries and the Xbox Live Arcade release of Doom II.
Starting with the Games on Demand lineup, Infinity Ward's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is now available in all regions except the United Kingdom and Japan for $39.99. Microsoft is also now selling Battlestations: Midway in all regions except India and Japan, with the Eidos-developed naval action, real-time tactical game available for $19.99. Rounding out Microsoft's Games on Demand releases this week is last year's Battlefield 2: Modern Combat, which is now available in Europe, Australia, and the United Kingdom. The game was already selling in North America for $19.99.
Microsoft hasn't announced a price point for Doom II, but the XBLA rerelease will feature all of the original game's levels, as well as an all-new chapter created by the development team at Nerve Software. The game will also feature online and offline multiplayer in deathmatch and co-op flavors for up to four players.
The week's other Live Arcade addition is Voodoo Dice, an 800 MSP ($10) puzzle-solving title with 60 single-player levels, 20 multiplayer levels, and four multiplayer modes. The game is developed by Exkee, creator of Colorz for WiiWare and the physic-based PC title I-Fluid.
Harmonix and MTV Games' Green Day: Rock Band demo provides a first look and hands-on opportunity for music game enthusiasts two weeks ahead of the finalized product's June 8 release. "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" and "Welcome to Paradise" are playable in the trial, which features three-part harmonies, a game mechanic first seen in last year's The Beatles: Rock Band.

Green Day bassist designs vegan trainer

Mike Dirnt, bassist with punk rock band Green Day, has designed his own trainer made from 100 per cent vegan materials.

The trainer is made out of fake leather and features a custom water-based synthetic adhesive to completely avoid using any animal products.

It is the product of a collaboration with shoe maker Macbeth and is the second time Dirnt has teamed up with the company.

"I always love working with Macbeth. We have worked flawlessly since day one and I am excited to continue our collaborative efforts," said Dirnt.

"Our first studio collaboration got great feedback and I am confident that everyone will appreciate my second design. I am extremely excited to get it out in stores and see the response."

The vegan trainer is set for release in the autumn of 2010.

Green Day play three UK gigs this summer, starting at the Old Trafford cricket ground in Manchester on June 16th.

The Beatles: Rock Band Green Day Was Disappointing in Europe

The Beatles: Rock Band secured quite a bit of media hype around videogames and their ability to bring entertainment experiences that can revive long lost content, like the songs of the quintessential rocn'n'roll bands that are no longer playing together.
But in the long running battle with the Guitar Hero franchise from Activision, it seems The Beatles: Rock Band did not do as well as MTV Games, which is working with Harmonix on its development, expected, especially on the European market. Worldwide, the game moved more than 1 million units to Beatles fans.
Scott Guthrie, who is the general manager for MTV Games, told British outlet MCV, “We were expecting higher sales. We got caught in a few things that happened last year. It was a tough economy; there was a lot of competitive products out there, and I think Beatles probably had softer sales than it would have if some of those things weren’t in play.”
Guthrie admitted one of the problems was that MTV Games and its parent company Viacom underestimated the power of Activision-backed advertising, something which will not be happening in the future, as those involved try to get as big a possible a slice of the declining music simulation market.
On June 8, Harmonix and MTV Games are launching, with Electronic Arts working as the distributor, Green Day: Rock Band, a title that depicts the punk rock band’s evolution from their breakout with “Dookie” to “21st Century Breakdown.” The three stated that the game might sell more than The Beatles: Rock Band. The game is coming to the Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3 and the Nintendo Wii.
Harmonix and MTV Games are also working on Rock Band 3, with the launch date expected to come close to Christmas. The title will offer songs from a variety of bands but there are limited details linked to it at the moment.

Green Day: Rock Band

GREEN DAY is a four-time Grammy award winning rock band with over 65 million record sales and an enormous global following worldwide – making them a perfect fit for the Rock Band franchise.
The game, Green Day:Rock Band, sets out to capture the energy and likeness of Green Day while offering players a plethora of past hits, including ‘Basket Case’, ‘Minority’ and ‘American Idiot.’
Harmonix project lead Chris Foster says: “Fans of the band will want to see every experience the musicians go through – and if playing them in 3D is not enough, we’ve included real video, out takes and unseen images from the Warner Bros Records vault too.
“They’re a fun band with immense appeal so it’s great to get to translate that into a video game.”
The developer also worked on Beatles: Rock Band and the original Guitar Hero, which went on to become a worldwide hit, rocking up $45m sales in its first year on sale. It also paved the way for a string of popular music peripheral-based video games over the following years.
“The Beatles: Rock Band got us a lot of people who wouldn’t have bought a Rock Band game before,” adds Foster.
“With this I think Green Day fans will love this version, even if they’re not Rock Band fans – they’re definitely potential Rock Band fans.
“The music, the intensity and the challenge is all there. If they’re a fan of Green Day but not yet of Rock Band, then this is definitely a way to pull them in.”
