Green Day and U2 win at MTV awards

Last night saw Green Day and U2 win gongs at the 2009 MTV Europe Music Awards.

Green Day and U2 were among the acts honoured at last night's 2009 MTV Europe Music Awards.

Presented by US singer Katy Perry in Berlin, the awards saw Green Day walk away with the best rock prize, while U2 were handed the best live act gong.

In addition, Placebo was named the best alternative group, Lady Gaga took best new act, Linkin Park scooped best world stage performance and Turkish hip hop/rock group maNga won best European act.

Meanwhile, Beyonce was the main winner of the evening, clinching three gongs - best female, best song for Halo and best video for Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It).

The awards opened with a song from Green Day, while U2 performed a short set from Berlin's historic Brandenburg Gate which was beamed into the show.

However, the U2 performance was not without controversy. Organisers installed a two-metre wall around the venue, blocking the view of people who turned up without tickets.

Green Day, Shakira, Mary J. Blige To Perform At American Music Awards

The 37th annual American Music Awards have lined up a few more acts to take the stage at the show on November 22. Green Day, Shakira, and Mary J. Blige have joined the performers list, which includes Rihanna, Jay-Z and Adam Lambert, to name a few, for the awards show that will air live on ABC.

"We're very excited about having Green Day, Rihanna, Shakira, Mary J. Blige and Keith Urban all performing on one stage," AMAs producer Larry Klein said in a statement. "Each year, we try to have a variety of artists and sounds, and I think these performers really showcase the depth of what this show brings to its fans."

The night's other big performers include Lady Gaga, Eminem, Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Daughtry, Jennifer Lopez, Alicia Keys and the Black Eyed Peas.

The awards show will feature an array of nominees determined by data from Nielsen SoundScan radio and retail figures, with Taylor Swift in the lead with six nominations, followed by Eminem and the late Michael Jackson at five apiece. Though Jackson had not released new material for nearly a decade at the time of his passing, his nominations are based on the strong sales of his catalog albums following his death.

Swift's nominations include Artist of the Year, Favorite Country Album (for Fearless), Favorite Female Pop or Rock Artist and Favorite Female Country Artist. MJ was also recognized in the Pop or Rock Artist of the Year category, Favorite Soul/R&B Male Artist and Favorite Soul/R&B Album (for Number Ones). Em's nominations include Artist of the Year; Favorite Male Pop or Rock Artist; Favorite Male Rap/Hip-Hop Artist and Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Album (for Relapse).

Other multiple-category nominees include Lady Gaga, T.I., Kings of Leon, Beyoncé and the Peas, who all have three. For the third year, winners will be determined by online voting.

Green Day To Perform in Times Square on New Year’s Eve

Do you already have your New Year’s Eve plans in place? Well, if you’re one of the millions set to attend the world-famous Times Square festivities, Green Day will be performing this year. The punk band is set to perform on “NBC’s New Year’s Eve with Carson Daly.” That’s right, Green Day and Carson Daly together, talk about a late 90’s MTV flashback.

If you don’t live in New York, you can always watch the Times Square extravaganza from the comfort of your couch. When asked about Green Day performing, Carson Daly said that he was “beyond excited.” It is surprising that Daly is still around. It seems like he was one of the few personalities that was able to make the transition from an MTV VJ into an actual TV host. Who would have thunk? Is his show still on?

Moreover, it is incredible that Green Day is still around and wildly successful. I don’t think anybody would have even thought such an idea ten years ago. Although, they can’t really sing about being anti-establishment, now that they are going to perform on a network owned by the multinational conglomerate GE. Oh the irony.

Green Day for New Year's Eve TV special

Green Day will perform on Carson Daly's New Year's Eve TV special.

The Grammy-winning band will take to the stage at New York's Times Square for NBC's New Year's Eve with Carson Daly, reports The AP.

The two-hour special will be broadcast live in high definition.

"We have built a great tradition of having the best and biggest music acts on our New Year's Eve live broadcast; having Green Day this year only solidifies that. I'm beyond excited," said Daly.

Green Day & Katy Perry Open Show

The MTV Europe Music Awards have kicked off in Berlin with a live performance from Green Day.

The three piece- who are nominated for Best Rock- played Know Your Enemy and Minority to start EMA proceedings in the German capital.

Backed by huge flames singer Billie Joe left the stage during the first track to run right through the crowd.

Hostess Katy Perry then took to the Katy Kat Club in front of 9,000 audience members wearing a stunning outfit.

She performed a medley of the Best Song nominees - including her own unique cabaret-style versions of Beyonce’s Halo and Kings Of Leon’s Use Somebody.

Lady Gaga and Kings of Leon are up for the most awards tonight.

Performers still left to play include U2, Jay-Z, Beyonce, Shakira and Leona Lewis.

On the road with Green Day: shots of the band goofing off behind the scenes.

The Reverend Strychnine Twitch, or Billie Joe Armstrong as he’s usually called, first alerted fans to the surprise show on the Green Day Website earlier yesterday. The band then posted a photo of themselves in their Foxboro garb on their Twitter page. According to NME, in addition to playing Foxboro’s entire 2008 debut album, the band also unearthed the Warning rarity “Blood, Sex and Booze” plus a track called “Supermodel Robots” from another surreptitious Green Day side project, the Network.

Keeping with the trick-or-treat spirit, after exhausting that initial cavalcade of songs, the band next performed the title song “Stop, Drop and Roll” four more times consecutively, claiming each time they’d played it better than before. The band then launched into covers of songs by the Who (”A Quick One, While He’s Away” and “My Generation,” which Green Day covered on their 1990 Sweet Children EP), the Ramones (”Blitzkrieg Bop”) and Chuck Berry (”Johnny B. Goode”) before ending the performance with a sixth rendition of — you guess it, “Stop, Drop and Roll.”
